The IP rating is the most basic selection parameter for electrical cabinets. Many people only know that "the higher the number, the better", but in fact, the two digits have separate meanings.
First digit = Dust protection level (0–6)
0 = No protection → 1 = Protected against large solid particles → 2 = Protected against finger access → 3 = Protected against small tools → 4 = Protected against fine wires → 5 = Limited dust protection → 6 = Completely dust-tight
Second digit = Water protection level (0–9)
0 = No water resistance → 1 = Protected against vertical dripping water → 2 = Protected against dripping water at 15° tilt → 3 = Protected against spraying water → 4 = Protected against splashing water → 5 = Protected against water jets → 6 = Protected against powerful water jets → 7 = Protected against temporary immersion → 8 = Protected against continuous immersion
Application-based Selection Guide
Dry indoor machine room → IP20~IP30
General workshop environment → IP40~IP44
Humid / dusty workshop → IP54~IP55
Outdoor areas / high-pressure washing → IP65~IP66
Keep this in mind: A higher IP rating is not always better. Choosing the minimum sufficient standard to balance protection and heat dissipation is the optimal solution.
